Traditional Versus Low Cost Airlines – Who to Fly With?

Traditional Versus Low Cost Airlines – Who to Fly With?

Are you planning a weekend getaway or a holiday break and want to find cheap air tickets? Before you start searching for them, find out if it is more beneficial for you to fly with traditional or low cost airlines. Both types have their pros and cons and it can pay off to consider them in advance.

What is the biggest difference between these airlines? Ironically, it is not always the air ticket price. Traditional airlines had to decrease their prices on many (especially short-haul) routes because of fierce competition and the prices can be often similar. If you watch carefully airfare deals offered by traditional carriers, you can fly even cheaper with them than with low cost airlines.

However, you can encounter problems with finding affordable air tickets if you need only one-way flight, or your trip is short and you do not comply with airline's minimum-stay requirements. While low cost airlines make no difference whether you buy one-way or return flights, traditional companies often increase the price for a one-way trip so significantly, that in some cases it is cheaper to buy a round trip, even though you will not use the second leg of your flight.

There are also no limitations for return flights with low cost airlines. You can fly in the morning, go back the same day in the evening and still pay the same price for the air tickets. Contrary to that, traditional carriers sometimes set minimum-stay requirements or a Saturday-night-stay rule in order to get a bargain price. If your trip is only one or two days long, the price can be again much higher.

A great advantage of traditional airlines remains in all-in services. You will not pay extra for airport check-in or checked bags and if you happen to carry excess baggage, employees of traditional airlines are more likely to overlook one or two additional kilograms. In most cases you will get free refreshment on board with these airlines, but they are some exceptions – for example SAS does not offer complimentary drinks and snacks on their short-haul flights any more.

It is therefore very useful to decide before buying an air ticket, how many bags you are going to travel with and which of them you need to take on board with you. Traditional carriers enable you to take one carry-on bag together with a handbag or a laptop, whereas some low cost airlines (such as Ryanair) allow you to have only one piece of carry-on baggage. You have to check in all the others and pay a fee for it. Because of that even an air ticket for 1 cent can get pretty pricey.

Recession Busting Luxury Hotels

Recession Busting Luxury Hotels

At the start of the economic downturn, tourism was one of the first sectors to be discussed and which was thought would struggle. In fact, many tourism sectors saw a very profitable Christmas was a good number of bookings. Around 11 million Britain’s left the country which is not taking into account the millions that stayed in UK hotels over the Christmas period.

The luxury hotel market is especially seeing good figures which can be put down to many factors. A high number of luxury hotels are owned and run independently. This is a practice that in times of recession can sometimes be more of a worry to the hotelier but at least they can keep a tighter run on operations and do better to understand the current need of the consumer. Another theory as to why people are still booking holidays and small hotel UK breaks is that they are treating their holiday or short break as necessity to escape the stresses of work and the constant reminder of the downturn on the news.

Many hotels and tourism business are offering good discounts at the moment. This has a lot to do with the time of year as January and February are traditionally the quietest months for a hotel and this business sector generally offers incentives anyway. This is another reason the best hotels in the UK are seeing good guest numbers. They have good offers and for a high proportion of the population, without an offer, they would normally not be able to afford it. Luxury hotels offer a niche, extra added value. In time such as these, the feeling of added value and the quality can work very well. The hotel industry is very competitive but top hotels have unique selling points whether that is an award winning head chef, boutique and individually designed rooms or a spectacular location.

Taking advantage of the internet is essential. With such a tool, prices can be compared and checked throughout the whole country and without the need to leave the house. Often, hotels have internet booking offers and incentives too. Images and a description of the hotel along with location details are all there to compare.

Even though the Christmas period did see a good number of Britain’s go abroad, this is not necessarily going to be the case further on in the year. The pound against the euro is still struggling as well as against the dollar. The UK hotel and tourism industry are hoping for a good year as a result of this.

Be careful before giving out your card details or any other financial details while transacting online. You must not trust every web portal or all the deals that may come your way even if they seem astoundingly cheap or cost effective. Check out the rating of such web portals or better still try out only the best of web sites life expedia.com, globester.com, and a few others. These are some of the most trusted websites.

It does not infer that you have to sit for hours while searching for attractive offers on air tickets. Just a timely, analytical glance once a week or so is enough to give you a fair assessment of air fares.

Another easy thing that you can do is to choose smaller airports and not so prominent airlines. This supposedly easy tip helps in cutting air ticket costs by huge margins and it does not result in compromising in any way. Famous or not, all the airlines have a set criteria and guidelines. Airport regulatory authorities see to it that all the airlines follow the basic guidelines. This is another very important tip to look for on cheap tickets websites. Moreover, you also have the added advantage of increased discounts and awesome packages. Smaller and the not so famous airlines try to lure travelers through such promotional schemes. Trying in bit of change your dream trip easy on your pocket, too. All in all, a thorough search is the key for the best results.

Ixigo Shows Lowest Airfares - the Hindu Confirms it Now!

Ixigo Shows Lowest Airfares
- the Hindu Confirms it Now!

We have been saying it for ages, but finally some brilliant journalism from The Hindu Business Line uncovers the dark secret of the online travel industry and the ongoing strategic shift in airline focus to selling directly.

In an article published on 6 Feb 2009, Shubhra Tandon reports - "If you thought you were getting the best bargains for air travel on portals like Cleartrip, Yatra, Makemytrip and so on, think again. This may seem tough to believe but airline Web sites are actually offering the best deals.

The chances are that you could get a ticket Rs 150-Rs 400 cheaper or, with a great degree of luck and timing, even close to Rs 2,000!

While fares are largely a function of demand and supply, the transaction/service fee levied by travel agents is resulting in cheaper deals on airlines’ Web site.

For instance, a ticket on an Indigo flight from Mumbai to New Delhi booked on its Web site for March 8 is available for Rs 2,123 (inclusive of taxes and surcharges), which is Rs 150 lower than the figure of Rs 2,273 on travel portals.

The cheapest fare on Air India’s Web site between Mumbai-Hyderabad is Rs 2,272 against portals, which hover around Rs 2,500 for the same date. Similarly, a ticket on Kingfisher Airlines between Mumbai-Bangalore is available for Rs 2,800 against around Rs 3,000 on portals.

The comparison holds good for tickets on other routes and other airlines with some exceptions, of course."

Other highlights from the article include a quote by Mr Foo Chai Woo, General Manager, India, Singapore Airlines - “As an airline it is our commercial prerogative to market directly to the consumer. There is also a message that airlines are trying to get across to the customers –‘Keep checking our Web site, we could have something better to offer"

An executive from MakeMyTrip tries to argue that the difference between the fares on their site and the airline site are due to "a lag in matching fluctuations" (in fare). This perception is corrected at the end of the article by Mr Samyukth Sridharan, Chief Commercial Officer, SpiceJet - " Online travel agents charge for services they offer. They provide multiple choices to customers in one go which, in turn, carries with it some advantages. At the same time, we also want to drive customers to our own Web sites. And since this is a direct channel, there is no transaction fee charged on bookings there"

As far as iXiGO.com is concerned, as we all know, we show airline fares directly from airline sites and allow you to book them there. This article only confirms that we find you the cheapest fares 100% of the time
